Angry Birds Camp: Summer 2012
In the Summer of 2012, MaST Scholars partnered with Ysleta ISD Mentor Teachers were inspired by the extremely popular app Angry Birds to develop TEKS-aligned 5-E style lesson plans for a one-week camp centered around the math and science behind the fun and challenging game. The camp was held at five different campuses where students:
- Used TI-Inspire Calculators to model quadratic functions
- Were challenged to build their own demonstration of centripetal force
- Explored the Laws of Motion with balloons, skate boards, and rockets
- Constructed roller coasters that resembled parent functions
The week ended in a field trip to the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo, New Mexico.
MaST would like to thank ADP, Ysleta ISD, UTEP GEAR UP, and all of the Mentor Teachers for their guidance and support as well as all of the parents and sponsors for the program.
